Reversible JPEG recompression to JPEG XL (JXL)

JPG to JXL Converter

Convert JPG or JPEG to a reversible JPEG XL file without installing software. This mode preserves the original JPEG so a compatible decoder can restore it exactly. Use it when your image software or archive supports JXL.

How to convert JPEG to reversible JXL

Reversible conversion keeps the existing JPEG information. It does not resize the picture, improve lost detail, or apply a new quality setting.

  1. Choose your JPEG files

Select Add files and choose .jpg or .jpeg images. This page is already set to reversible JXL output.

  2. Run the conversion

Select Run Convert. IMAGEEE checks that the result can restore the exact original JPEG before making the JXL available.

  3. Compare the file sizes

Check the original and output sizes. Savings depend on the source file; a smaller result is not guaranteed.

  4. Download and open the JXL

Download the result and open it in the application where you plan to use it. Keep the JPEG if that application cannot read JXL.

Before replacing a JPEG with JXL

Constraint Converter behavior What you should do
Application support Some browsers, upload forms, and image apps do not accept JXL. Check your destination before replacing a JPEG.
Unusual JPEG files Some JPEG variants, including certain CMYK files, may not support exact reconstruction. If conversion fails, keep the JPEG or choose another output in the full converter.
Editing Resizing, stripping metadata, and changing quality do not belong to this reversible mode. Use the other image tools when you want an edited copy.
Metadata Reversible output preserves information from the original JPEG, including its metadata. If you need to remove location data, clean the JPEG with EXIF Remover before converting it.

Troubleshooting JPEG to JXL

Problem Why it happens What to try
The JXL will not open The receiving app may not support JPEG XL. Use a compatible viewer or keep JPG for that destination.
The result is not smaller Compression savings vary between JPEG files. Compare the sizes and keep the format that suits your needs.
I need the original JPEG back Reversible JXL needs JPEG reconstruction rather than a fresh JPEG export. Use a compatible decoder with JPEG reconstruction support.
Conversion failed The file may be damaged or unsupported by reversible conversion. Check that the original opens correctly, then try a standard output in the full converter.

When is reversible JXL useful?

Use it for a JXL-compatible archive or application when exact JPEG restoration matters. For an email attachment, website upload, or recipient whose software you do not know, JPEG is usually the more compatible choice.

Convert a batch of JPEGs

Try one photo in the receiving application first. Then add more JPEGs, convert them, and use Download Batch ZIP for completed results. Compare each output size before replacing your own original files.

JPG to JXL Converter – Reversible JPEG XL FAQ

Can the downloaded JXL restore my exact JPEG file?

Yes, when conversion succeeds. IMAGEEE verifies exact restoration before offering the JXL. Use a decoder with JPEG reconstruction support to recover the original file.

Does reversible recompression improve lost JPEG detail?

No. It preserves the existing JPEG information and does not recover detail already lost through JPEG compression.

What happens when exact reconstruction is unsupported or fails?

The conversion stops with an error and no JXL download is offered. Your source is not silently converted into a different image format.
