Choose by pixels, bytes, or missing resolution

Resize, compression, and upscaling solve different constraints. Measure the failed requirement first: pixel dimensions, upload byte limit, or insufficient display resolution. Then use the narrowest operation that fixes it.

Resize when width, height, or aspect ratio is wrong
Resizing changes pixel dimensions and is the direct choice for profile pictures, social placements, wallpapers, and fixed upload dimensions. Preserve aspect ratio unless the destination explicitly requires stretching, and choose crop or fit deliberately when the source and target shapes differ.
Compress when the byte limit is the problem
Compression targets download or upload size. Start from a dedicated target-size route for limits such as 6MB, 1MB, or 500KB, then inspect the result for text, edge, or gradient artifacts. A smaller file is not useful if the required detail becomes unreadable.
Upscale only when a larger pixel canvas is required
Upscaling creates more pixels and can improve presentation, but it cannot recover source detail that was never captured. Clean up the source first, upscale before a final size-limited compression pass, and compare the output at the actual viewing scale rather than judging only a zoomed preview.

Does compression always change image dimensions?

No. Compression can reduce encoded bytes while keeping the same width and height, although a strict target may also benefit from resizing. Use the resize workflow when exact dimensions are mandatory and the compression workflow when the file-size ceiling is mandatory.

Can upscaling restore detail lost in a tiny or blurred source?

No tool can reconstruct the original scene with certainty. Upscaling may produce a cleaner larger presentation, but invented or smoothed detail should not be treated as recovered evidence or a faithful substitute for a higher-resolution source.
